Postcard Campaign
September 2006
In August, when it emerged that US transport planes loaded with bombs and missiles destined for Israel to be used in the invasion of Lebanon were refuelling at British airfields, the public was once again reminded of the Governments direct and indirect support for Israeli aggression. Here in Bristol East we are fortunate that our MP, Kerry McCarthy, has visited Palestine on Parliamentary delegations and seen the injustice with her own eyes. She, and another Bristol MP Roger Berry, have published hard-hitting articles in the local newspaper.
A postcard campaign was launched and rapidly gained momentum. Hundreds of cards were signed by all sections of the community including campaigners, various faith groups, at mosques, and by many other people passing by street stalls. The cards were presented to Kerry McCarthy on Friday22nd September on the eve of the Labour Party Conference.
They were pinned to giant display boards to illustrate the shocking deaths and injuries of Palestinians in just the last three months alone.
The media coverage has been considerable including:-
BBC1 ‘Politics Show’ Sunday 24th September
Bristol Radio Ramadan Tuesday 26th September
Bristol Evening Post Wednesday 27th September
Morning Star Wednesday 27th September
Muslim Weekly Saturday 29th September
Islamic Times (TBC) October

Bristol Evening post
AUGUST 2006 - Bristol Evening Post covered the story again on Friday 28th July with a half page article about the Computers project. It publicised the website and referred to the backing from Kerry McCarthy, MP Bristol East, giving her supportive quote at length. It also gave advanced publicity for the film evening at the Cube on Monday 7th August. I had hoped for more description of the fencing off of the town of Marda, but this seemed to get a bit lost in the general description. I suppose photos of fences don’t look very exciting, well if you’re not trapped behind them that is. Instead they used one of my pictures of the school children demonstrating in Bethlehem from the website, which although not exactly Marda is a good strong picture of Palestinians resisting.
DECEMBER 2005 - Ed Hill a teacher from Easton, has just returned from a trip to the West Bank and say she hopes to encourage others to help Palestinian children who are trying to achieve an education in difficult circumstances.
Bristols Palestine Solidarity Campaign raised £1,500 from a sponsored walk, street stalls and through appeals at Bristol mosques.
Mr Hill presented the money to the orphanage in the town of Tulkarm, in the north west of the Israeli occupied West Bank.
He spent a day with the children and staff of the orphanage, located in Tulkarms Red Cresent hospital.
Now he is appealing for donations of laptop computers and digital cameras which he can take out to the regions to be used in schools.
Mr Hill said: "The children in the orphanage are well cared for by loving staff and are being well educated to give them the best start in life."
